Knole House (auch Knowle House) ist ein großes Herrenhaus nahe Sevenoaks im Nordwesten der Grafschaft Kent in England, umgeben von einem großen Wildpark. Bemerkenswert ist der zum großen Teil unveränderte Erhaltungszustand des Anwesens und seiner Räume aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert. Auch der Wildpark ist seit fast 400 Jahren unverändert, allerdings fielen einige Bäume dem großen Sturm im Jahr 1987 zum Opfer.

Geschichte des Hauses

Knole House wurde von Thomas Bourchier, Erzbischof von Canterbury, zwischen 1456 und 1486 erbaut. 1538 gelangte es in den Besitz von Thomas Cranmer, der es an Heinrich VIII. abgeben musste. Dieser ließ das Haus erweitern. Es hat 365 Zimmer wie das Jahr Tage, 52 Treppen wie das Jahr Wochen und 7 Höfe wie die Woche Tage und ist damit ein sogenanntes „Kalenderhaus“.

Im Jahr 1566, während der Regierungszeit von Königin Elisabeth I., erhielt ihr Cousin Thomas Sackville Knole House zum Geschenk, dessen Nachkommen seither dort wohnen, die Schriftstellerin Vita Sackville-West wurde dort geboren. Sie beschrieb Knole House in ihrem Werk Knole and the Sackvilles, das 1922 veröffentlicht wurde. Als ihr Vater im Jahr 1928 starb, durfte sie den Besitz nicht erben, da die männliche Erbfolge eintrat. Vita Sackville-West hat diesen Verlust nie verwunden, selbst der Kauf von Sissinghurst Castle, den sie gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann Harold Nicolson im Jahr 1930 tätigte, war nur ein kleiner Trost.

Ihre Freundin Virginia Woolf nahm die Geschichte des Hauses und die der Sackville-Familie in ihrer Romanbiographie Orlando zur Grundlage. In der Great Hall ist ein Faksimile des gebundenen Manuskripts von Orlando ausgestellt.

Seit 1946 ist Knole House zum Teil im Besitz des National Trust, und die Besucher können kostbare Sammlungen von Möbeln, Silber, Tapeten und Gemälden bewundern, darunter Porträts von van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough, Peter Lely, Godfrey Kneller und Joshua Reynolds. Ein Teil des Hauses wird von der Familie Sackville-West bewohnt. Lord Sackville und seine Familie sind noch im Besitz der Gärten und der sie umgebenden Ländereien. Knole Park ist eine Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), und einmal im Jahr findet dort das Knole Run statt.
