DeFuniak Springs ist eine Kleinstadt in Walton County, Florida, sowie Sitz der Countyverwaltung (County Seat) des Walton Countys.

Die Einwohnerzahl betrug nach dem Zensus 2000 insgesamt 5089 Einwohner. Im Jahre 2004 hatte sie sich auf 5141 Einwohner erhöht.

Geschichte

Die Stadt wurde von der Pensacola & Atlantic Railroad, einer Tochtergesellschaft der Louisville & Nashville Railroad gegründet. Die Bahn wurde in den 1880er Jahren ins Leben gerufen, um die Endstation der Louisville & Nashville Railroad in der Nähe von Pensacola mit der westlichen Endstation der Seaboard Railroad bei River Junction – heute Chattahoochee – zu verbinden. Sie wurde nach Frederick R. deFuniak, dem Präsidenten der Louisville & Nashville Railroad benannt. Wie dies häufig im nordwestlichen Florida der Fall war, wurde DeFuniak Springs hauptsächlich von Schotten aus Virginia sowie aus North- und South Carolina besiedelt.

Persönlichkeiten

Der frühere Gouverneur von Florida Sidney Catts (* 1863, † 1936) war hier ansässig.

Der American Football-Schiedsrichter und Zahnarzt Walt Anderson (* 1952) wurde hier geboren.

Der Baseballmanager Buck Showalter (* 1956) wurde in DeFuniak Springs geboren.
