Tiwai Point ist eine Landzunge im Süden der Südinsel Neuseelands am Eingang des Naturhafens von Bluff. Sie erstreckt sich vom Westende der Awarua Plain zwischen der Awarua Bay im Norden und der Foveaux Strait im Süden in westlicher Richtung.

Aluminiumhütte

Auf der Halbinsel befindet sich der Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter, eine Aluminiumhütte, die einer der größten Industriestandorte Neuseelands ist.[1] Die 1971 eröffnete Hütte ist unter den 20 größten Aluminiumhütten der Welt.[2]

Die Schmelzhütte und das Kraftwerk Manapouri wurden als gemeinsames Projekt errichtet, um die Leistungsaufnahme von bis zu 610 Megawatt abzudecken.[3] Das Werk ist der größte Energieverbraucher der Südinsel und verbraucht ein Drittel der Energie der Südinsel und 15% der Energie Neuseelands.[4]
