John Cope KB (* 1690; † 1760) war ein britischer General und Mitglied des Parlaments.

Leben

John Cope, Sohn des Lieutnant-Colonels Henry Cope, besuchte die Westminster School und begann seine Karriere beim Militär 1707 in einem Dragonerregiment. Cope kämpfte im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg und im Österreichischen Erbfolgekrieg. Für seine Leistungen im Österreichischen Erbfolgekrieg wurde er mit dem Order of the Bath ausgezeichnet. 1745 war er der Oberbefehlshaber der Regierungstruppen in Schottland in der Schlacht bei Prestonpans, in der er vernichtend geschlagen wurde.

Ab 1722 war er Mitglied des britischen Unterhauses, von 1722 bis 1727 für den Wahlkreis Queenborough (Isle of Sheppey), von 1727 bis 1734 für Liskeard in Cornwall und von 1738 bis 1741 für den Wahlkreis Orford in Suffolk.

Hey, Johnnie Cope

Der schottische Folksänger Adam Skirving (1719–1803) komponierte nach Copes Niederlage in Prestonpans das populäre Volkslied Hey, Johnnie Cope, Are Ye Waking Yet? (Hey Johnnie Cope, are you awake yet?), das bis heute immer wieder von schottischen Folksängern neu aufgenommen und gespielt wird, so zum Beispiel von The Corries, The Tannahill Weavers und Planxty.
