Whiskey Ring

Als Whiskey Ring wird in den Vereinigten Staaten ein Skandal bezeichnet, der 1875 aufgedeckt wurde. Im Rahmen einer Verschwörung von Parlamentsabgeordneten, Politikern, Whiskeybrennern und Großhändlern wurden Steuergelder umgeleitet. Der Whiskey-Ring begann 1871 seine Aktivitäten in St. Louis, war aber auch in Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, New Orleans und Peoria organisiert.

Bevor man ihnen auf die Schliche kam, konnte eine Gruppe von republikanischen Politikern, angeführt von einem Bundesrichter aus Washington, mehrere Millionen Dollar aus Steuergeldern in Schnaps investieren. Die illegalen Aktivitäten basierten auf einer weitläufigen Bestechung von Steuereintreibern und Kaufleuten.

Finanzminister Benjamin H. Bristow zerbrach den Ring 1875 mithilfe von Geheimagenten. In der Gerichtsverhandlung im Oktober desselben Jahres in Jefferson City (Montana) wurden 110 Verurteilungen gesprochen und über 3 Millionen Dollar Steuergelder wiedererlangt.
