Geschichte

Salem wurde 1806 von dem pennsylvenischen Töpfer John Straughhan (Strawn) und dem New Jerseyer Schuhmacher Zadok Street gegründet. Der Stadtname leitet sich aus "Shalom" und "Solaam" ab und bedeutet "Frieden". Frühe Siedler des Orts waren Quäker.
