Roebourne ist eine alte Stadt aus der Zeit des Goldrauschs.

Geographie

Roebourne liegt in der Pilbara-Region in Western Australia und ist Verwaltungssitz des Shire of Roebourne. Es ist 202 km von Port Hedland und 1.563 km von Perth entfernt.

Geschichte

Die Stadt gedieh während des Höhepunkts ihres Goldrauschs im späten 19. Jahrhundert und war eine der größten Siedlungen zwischen Darwin und Perth. Sie wurde nach John Septimus Roe benannt.

Gold aus dem Nullagine und den Kupferminen in der Umgebung trug zum anfänglichen Wohlstand Roebournes bei. Mit dem Niedergang beider Einnahmequellen verlor die Stadt ihre Einwohner und war nur noch ein Schatten ihres früheren Selbsts. An diese Ära erinnern noch verschiedene staatliche Gebäude rund um die Stadt.

Später wurde Roeburne berühmt-berüchtigt für die Kämpfe zwischen den Aborigines und der Polizei, die in einem Bundesreport dokumentiert wurden. Der Report zeigte, dass das Verhältnis von Polizei zu Bürgern in Roebourne (mit 1200 Aborigines-Einwohnern) das Fünffache des Verhältnisses von dichter besiedelten Gebieten in Westaustralien war.

Heute lebt die Stadt vom in der Nähe befindlichen North West Coastal Highway und vom Tourismus, insbesondere als Tor zu vielen Nationalparks im Landesinneren.
