Muhsin Mahdi

Muhsin Mahdi

Muḥsin Mahdī (* 21. Juni 1926; † 9. Juli 2007) war ein US-amerikanischer Arabist und Islamwissenschaftler irakischer Herkunft. Er war eine der führenden Autoritäten auf den Gebieten der arabischen Geschichte, Philologie und Philosophie.

1954 erwarb er den Doktortitel in Philosophie. Von 1955-1957 unterrichtete er an der Universität Bagdad, von 1957-1962 als Professeur assistant für Arabisch an der University of Chicago. Seit 1965 war er Professor für Arabisch und Islamstudien an der University of Chicago. Von 1969-1996 war er James Richard Jewett Professor für Arabisch im Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations an der Harvard University.

Muhsin Mahdi erwarb sich Verdienste um die Erforschung der Geschichten aus Tausendundeiner Nacht sowie des Philosophen Alfarabi und der Grundlagen der islamischen Philosophie.
