Modern Language Association

Die Modern Language Association of America (MLA) ist der wichtigste Berufsverband der USA für Literaturwissenschaftler und Literaturkritiker. Sie hat etwa 30.000 Mitglieder, zumeist Professoren, Doktoranden und andere Akademiker, die sich wissenschaftlich mit Englischer und fremdsprachiger Literatur beschäftigen. Über 2.000 Mitglieder leben nicht in den USA oder in Kanada.

Die MLA wurde 1883 gegründet als Diskussionsgruppe für Gelehrte der modernen Sprachen (also aller außer den klassischen Sprachen wie Latein und Griechisch).

Vorsitzende ist derzeit Marjorie Perloff von der Stanford University; zu ihren Vorgängern gehören Domna C. Stanton, Francis Andrew March, Stephen Greenblatt, Edward Said, Wayne Booth, Northrop Frye und Barbara Herrnstein Smith.

Ihre als "MLA Style" bezeichneten Festlegungen zur Verfassung wissenschaftlicher Papiere, etwa zur Gliederung und Zitierweise, sind Grundlage auch vieler Nachbardisziplinen. In Buchform erschienen zwei Ausgaben:
