Mobilstation (MS, engl. Mobile Station) ist das Endgerät im Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). Eine Mobilstation besteht im Wesentlichen aus den zwei Einheiten Mobiltelefon und SIM-Karte (SIM).

Mobiltelefon

Eine Einheit der Mobilstation ist das eigentliche Mobiltelefon (engl. Mobile Equipment (ME)). Das Mobiltelefon ist keinem bestimmten Benutzer zugeordnet. Jedoch ist trotzdem jedem Mobiltelefon eine eindeutige Nummer, die International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), zugeteilt. Anhand der IMEI kann erkannt werden, ob das Gerät zugelassen ist und wo das Gerät hergestellt wurde. Der Netzbetreiber kann diese IMEI bei der Authentifizierung abfragen und so unzulässige, gestörte oder gestohlene Geräte erkennen und ggf. sperren. Anstelle der üblichen Ausführung als Mobiltelefon findet man das Mobile Equipment auch in Form von UMTS-Datenkarten und UMTS-Sticks zur reinen Datenübertragung sowie stationär als GSM-Tischtelefone, Mobilfunk-Gateways und UMTS-Router.

SIM-Karte

Die zweite Einheit der Mobilstation ist die SIM-Karte (engl. Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)). Die SIM-Karte enthält einen Prozessor und Datenspeicher und ist durch eine veränderbare Persönliche Identifikationsnummer (PIN) vor unbefugter Benutzung geschützt. Durch die SIM-Karte wird das Mobiltelefon einem Nutzer zugeordnet und dieser authentifiziert. Für diese Zwecke sind auf der SIM-Karte geheime Nummern und Algorithmen gespeichert. Diese dienen bei Verbindungen auch der Verschlüsselung der Sprach- und Signallisierungsdaten (Chiffrierung). Weiterhin können auf der SIM-Karte weitere Daten gespeichert sein, zum Beispiel:

  • temporäre, netzbezogene Daten
  • bevorzugte Netze
  • gesperrte Netze
  • Telefonbuch
  • Notizbuch
  • Nachrichten des Short Message Service (SMS)
  • zuletzt angerufene Telefonnummern
