Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk (* 3. Februar 1947 in Astoria, New York City als Melanie Anne Safka), in erster Linie unter ihrem Vornamen Melanie bekannt, ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin und Songwriterin.

Im Alter von fünf Jahren machte die Tochter der Jazzsängerin Polly Safka-Bertolo ihre erste Aufnahme mit Gimme a Little Kiss, einem Lied, das sie in der Manier von Shirley Temple vortrug.

Europa entdeckte ihre Talente vor den USA. Ihr Song Bobo's Party war 1969 für mehrere Wochen hintereinander an der Spitze der französischen Charts. Im selben Jahr hatte sie mit Beautiful People einen Hit in den Niederlanden und trat beim Woodstock-Festival auf, wo sie den Platz der Incredible String Band einnahm, die sich weigerte, im Regen aufzutreten.

Die damals 22jährige Melanie hatte nach eigener Aussage den Eindruck, dass sie in Woodstock offenbar die einzige war, die nicht unter Drogeneinfluss stand. Sie kannte zwar alle Künstler aus den Medien, hatte aber keinen davon jemals aus der Nähe gesehen. Nicht nur deshalb trat sie mit starkem Lampenfieber auf. Sie spielte ihre beiden Lieder Beautiful People und Birthday of the Sun, während das Publikum in der Dunkelheit Kerzen im Takt der Musik bewegte, die zuvor ausgeteilt worden waren. Diesen Moment hielt sie später im Lied Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) (deutsch: Kerzen im Regen) fest, das es im folgenden Jahr und mit Chorbegleitung der Edwin Hawkins Singers bis auf Platz 6 der US-amerikanischen Charts schaffte und auch in Europa sehr erfolgreich war.

Ihr größter Hit in ihrer Heimat wurde 1971 allerdings Brand New Key, das auch unter dem Namen The Roller Skate Song bekannt ist und es an die Spitze der US-amerikanischen Charts schaffte.[1] In Deutschland und Großbritannien war sie 1970/71 außerdem noch mit dem Rolling Stones-Titel Ruby Tuesday sehr erfolgreich. Weltweit das erfolgreichste Lied von Melanie wurde What Have They Done to My Song, das in Deutschland in der Originalversion, aber auch in der deutschen Variante von Daliah Lavi bekannt ist: „Wer hat mein Lied so zerstört?“. Andere Erfolgstitel waren Peace Will Come, Nickel Song, Ring the Living Bell sowie 1973/74 die Coverversion des Shirelles-Titels Will You Love Me Tomorrow. Melanie wurde mit drei goldenen Schallplatten ausgezeichnet. 1972 erhielt sie in einer Leserwahl den Silbernen Bravo Otto der deutschen Jugendzeitschrift BRAVO.

Seit ihrem Auftritt in Woodstock hat die Sängerin fast jedes Jahr ein Album veröffentlicht, die größtenteils von ihrem Ehemann Peter Schekeryk produziert wurden. Die beiden haben drei Kinder, die auch alle im Musikgeschäft tätig sind: Leilah, Jeordie und Beau Jarred Schekeryk. Außerdem haben sie zwei Enkel.

2003 benutzte die australische Hip-Hop-Formation The Hilltop Hoods ein Sample aus Melanies People in the Front Row für ihren Song The Nosebleed Section. Im selben Jahr erschien ihr Album Paled by Dimmer Light, bei dem es sich um eine Coproduktion zwischen Peter und Beau Jarred Schekeryk handelt.

Sie tourt noch immer fast jedes Jahr und wird dabei oft von ihrem Sohn Beau Jarred als Gitarrist begleitet.
