Als Megakolon (oder Megacolon) (gr. megalos groß, lat. Colon Dickdarm) bezeichnet man eine mit chronischer Obstipation (Verstopftheit) einhergehende Dilatation (Erweiterung) des Dickdarms. Man unterscheidet die primäre Form, den Morbus Hirschsprung (ein angeborenes Megakolon aufgrund einer Aganglionose) von den sekundären Formen, die beispielsweise durch die Chagas-Krankheit oder Colitis ulcerosa verursacht werden.

Toxisches Megakolon

Als toxisches Megakolon, eine lebensbedrohliche Komplikation, bezeichnet man eine akute Dilatation des Kolons mit klinisch fulminanter Kolitis (Entzündung). Neben den obenstehenden Krankheiten kann es auch durch einen Morbus Crohn oder eine pseudomembranöse Colitis bedingt sein. Symptome sind ein schmerzhaft aufgetriebenes Akutes Abdomen, Ileus, Schock, hohes Fieber (septische Temperatur), stark erhöhte Blutsenkungsgeschwindigkeit, Tachykardie, Anämie sowie Störungen im Wasser- und Elektrolyt-Haushalt.

Die Diagnostik erfolgt durch Röntgen (Abdomenleeraufnahme), die Therapie durch eine Entlastung des Darms mittels Anlage eines Ileostomas oder einer Transversum- und Sigmafistel oder eine Radikaloperation (Proktokolektomie).
