Lauf des Rio Araguaia

Der 2.627 km lange Rio Araguaia ist einer der größten Flüsse Brasiliens. Er ist fast auf seinem gesamten Verlauf ein Grenzfluss. Er entspringt im Mato-Grosso-Plateau im Bundesstaat Goiás und fließt nördlich auf der Grenze zwischen den Bundesstaaten Mato Grosso und Goiás, später Mato Grosso und Tocantins, und zuletzt Pará und Tocantins. Er mündet bei São João in den Rio Tocantins.

An seinem Mittellauf teilt sich der Fluss in zwei Arme, die später wieder zusammenfließen und somit die Ilha do Bananal, die größte Flussinsel der Erde, bilden. Dort befindet sich auch der Nationalpark Araguaia, das Siedlungsgebiet der Carajá-Indios.

Im Rio Araguaia lebt unter anderem einer der grössten Süsswasserfische Arapaima Gigas.
