Information & Operations Management

Informationen als wichtige Unternehmensressourcen anzusehen, ist einer der wichtigsten Aspekte des Information Managements. Es beinhaltet die Entwicklung und das Management des IT Systems, das Management der IT-Infrastruktur (Software, Hardware, Netzwerke) und das effektive Nutzen von Informationssystemen zur Unterstützung der Unternehmensprozesse.

Operations Management beschäftigt sich dagegen mit der Produktion von Gütern und Dienstleistungen und achtet darauf, dass das Unternehmen effizient und effektiv arbeitet. Operations Management beinhaltet auch das Management von Ressourcen und die Distribution der Güter und Dienstleistungen.

Nach der Analyse der synergischen Effekte kann Information & Operations Management (IOM) wie folgt beschrieben werden: Die Nutzung von Informationstechnologien zur effizienten und effektiven Abwicklung von Unternehmensabläufen innerhalb der Organisation sowie mit Unternehmenspartnern.

Geschäfte in der globalen Wirtschaft sind heutzutage stark auf Informationstechnologien angewiesen. Organisationen sind vernetzt, Supply Chains überqueren Länder und Kontinente und Geschäftspartner sind oftmals über die ganze Welt verteilt.

Die meisten Unternehmen arbeiten mit elektronischen Mitteln. Enterprise-resource- planning und Supply-chain-management-Systeme sind der Kern der Informationsverarbeitung in allen Fortune-500-Fertigungsfirmen. Innovative neue Produkte werden von räumlich verstreuten Teams über das Internet entwickelt. Produktspezifizierungen, Angebote, Aufträge und Rechnungen werden über Computernetzwerke gesendet. Effektive Produktentwicklung, Fertigung und Logistik ohne IT sind heutzutage sowohl für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen als auch für multinationale Konzerne kaum vorstellbar.

Ausbildung in Information & Operations Management

Im Studium sollte sowohl die Theorie als auch die Praxis des Information and Operations Managements behandelt werden. Beides wird benötigt, um eine Basis für eine erfolgreiche Karriere zu legen. Die Masterprogramme sind normalerweise vier Semester lang und behandeln Themen wie "Management Information Systems", "Information Systems Development", "Supply Chain Management and Logistics" oder "Programming and Software Technology".

Perspektiven für Absolventen

Karriereziele für IOM-Absolventen sind beispielsweise CIO (Chief Information Officer), COO (Chief Operations Officer) oder CEO (Chief Executive Officer). Typische Positionen auf dem Weg nach oben sind Projekt- oder Programmmanager, Logistikmanager. Systemanalyst, IT-Anwendungsspezialist oder Unternehmensberater in Bereichen wie ERP (enterprise resource planning) und SCM (supply chain management).
