Der Aptychus ist der schaufelförmige zweiteilige Unterkiefer der Ammoniten, eine ausgestorbenen Gruppe der Kopffüßer. Neben seiner primären Funktion als Unterkiefer ist eine sekundäre Funktion als Operculum (Gehäusedeckel) wahrscheinlich.

Im Gegensatz zum aragonitischen Gehäuse, blieben die calcitischen Aptychen bei der Fossilisation oft erhalten. Da eine gemeinsame Erhaltung von Gehäuse und Aptychus jedoch selten ist, ist die Funktion des Aptychus nicht genau bekannt. Neben einer Verwendung als Grabwerkzeug, mit der das Tier das weiche Substrat des Meeresbodens nach Nahrung absuchte, könnte der Kieferapparat auch als Schutzklappe gedient haben, die bei Gefahr den größten Teil der Wohnkammer verschloss.

Die übrigen Ammoniten besitzen als Kieferapparat den einteiligen hornigen Anaptychus der sonstigen Kopffüßer (Cephalopoda).
