Mary Therese McCarthy (* 21. Juni 1912 in Seattle; † 25. Oktober 1989 in New York City) war eine US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin und Frauenrechtlerin.

Leben

Mary McCarthy verlor im Alter von sechs Jahren ihre Eltern. Von ihren Vormündern wurde sie sowohl protestantisch als auch katholisch und jüdisch erzogen.[1] Sie besuchte das Mesdames des Sacred Heart Convent in Seattle, das Annie Wright Seminary in Tacoma und das Vassar College.

Unter anderem wurde sie wegen ihrer Freundschaft mit Hannah Arendt bekannt. Ihr freundschaftlich-philosophischer Briefwechsel erlangte Weltruhm. McCarthy nahm streitbar und engagiert an New Yorker Intellektuellenfehden teil.

Ihre beiden Reportagen Vietnam-Report (1967) und Hanoi 1968 (1968) werden auch mehr als 30 Jahre nach Ende des Vietnam-Krieges als profunde Hintergrundberichte geschätzt, die über die Situation in Vietnam während des US-Engagements geschrieben wurden.
