Ein Approximant (lat. approximare, „sich nähern“; dt. auch Näherungslaut) ist ein Laut, bei dem die ausgeatmete Luft durch den Mundraum relativ gleichmäßig und ungehindert strömen kann. Zu den Approximanten gehören die Vokale und alle Konsonanten, die mit pulmonisch-egressiver oder pharyngaler Luft gebildet werden und im Vokaltrakt (Ansatzrohr) keinen Verschluss oder eine Enge mit „Reibung“ (Geräuschentwicklung, Luftverwirbelungen) überwinden müssen.

Approximanten lassen sich phonologisch in Unterklassen einteilen:

  • vokalische Approximanten (Vokale), z. B. a oder i
  • konsonantische Approximanten
    • Halbvokale (auch Semivokal, Halbkonsonant, Sonant oder Gleitlaut genannt), z. B. im deutschen j oder im englischen w
    • laterale Approximanten, z. B. das deutsche l
