Applied Films ist ein Unternehmen der Vakuumtechnologie und wurde 1976 in den USA, in Longmont, Colorado gegründet.

Nach der Teilung der Leybold AG im Jahre 1993 und Abspaltung der Leybold Optics (ebenfalls in Alzenau) sowie der Leybold Systems GmbH in Hanau kaufte Applied Films größere Firmenbereiche von Leybold in Deutschland auf, welche jetzt das Hauptgeschäft des Unternehmens bilden. Der Hauptsitz des Unternehmens befindet sich weiterhin in Colorado. Forschung, Entwicklung und Produktion der Maschinen finden dagegen hauptsächlich in Alzenau statt, wo auch der Großteil der Mitarbeiter beschäftigt wird.

Applied Films befasst sich mit der Entwicklung und Herstellung von Maschinen und Anlagen zur Beschichtung von Glasscheiben und Folien mit Dünnschichten. Die Anlagen und Maschinen dienen hauptsächlich zur Herstellung von Bestandteilen von TFT- und OLED-Displays, Glasscheiben für Thermoschutzverglasungen sowie zur Herstellung von amorphen Solarzellen. Mit Aluminium bedampfte Kunststofffolien kommen u. a. bei Lebensmittelverpackungen und Folienkondensatoren zum Einsatz.

Im Mai 2006 wurde Applied Films vom Nanotechnologieunternehmen Applied Materials für 464 Millionen US-Dollar aufgekauft, wobei die Übernahme im Juli 2006 abgeschlossen wurde.
