Das Naturschutzgebiet Mare aux Hippopotames wurde 1937 als Forêt Classée gegründet, gehört zu den international bedeutenden Feuchtgebieten der Ramsar-Konvention und erlangte 1986 den Status eines UNESCO-Biosphärenreservats. Es liegt im Westen Burkina Fasos, ca. 80 km nördlich von Bobo-Dioulasso nahe der Ortschaft Bala und umfasst 16 300 ha.
