Der Mammiapfel (Mammea americana) ist eine Laubbaumart aus der Gattung Mammea aus der Familie der Clusiaceae, welche essbare Früchte trägt.

Verbreitung

Ursprünglich stammt der Mammiapfel aus der Karibik oder dem tropischen Südamerika, vermutlich von den Antillen, von wo er sich in den tropischen Regionen Amerikas ausbreitete. In Mexiko, Mittelamerika und im nördlichen Südamerika bis Guayana ist er sehr bekannt. Daneben ist er auch zum Beispiel in Westafrika, Ostasien und Hawaii eingeführt worden.

Beschreibung

Der Mammiapfel ist ein immergrüner Baum, der eine Wuchshöhe von etwa 18 bis 21 Meter erreicht. Die Blätter sind dunkelgrün, elliptisch und lederartig; sie werden bis 20 mal 10 Zentimeter groß. Die duftenden Blüten tragen vier bis sechs Kronblätter; aufgeblüht sind sie etwa zweieinhalb bis vier Zentimeter groß.

Er hat sehr süße, rot-fleischige Früchte mit einem Durchmesser zwischen 10 und 20 Zentimeter, die Mammiäpfel, die frisch verzehrt oder zu Marmelade verarbeitet werden. Sie enthalten meist einen Kern, größere Früchte auch zwei bis vier.

Der Mammibaum ist sehr frostempfindlich.
