Malakh

Im Zoroastrismus gibt es, ähnlich wie in anderen Religionen, Malakhim für Engel und Daeva für Dämonen. Malakh ist die Einzahl von Malakhim.

Auch die hebräische Bibel berichtet von Malakhim, vor allem als Boten Gottes, die verschiedenen Erzvätern erschienen. In der Genesis 16:9 erschienen sie Hagar, Lot in Genesis 19:1 und Abraham in Genesis 22:11. Sie befanden sich hinauf- und herabsteigend auf der Jakobsleiter in Genesis 29:12 und erschienen Jakob selbst in Genesis 31:11-13. Gott versprach Moses einen Malakhim zu senden in Exodus 33:2 und schickte einen auf Bileams Weg in Numeri 23:31.

Im Gegensatz zu den Cherubim und Seraphim, die als Lobpreiser und Streiter Gottes gelten, sind die Malakhim eher als Boten von Gottes sittlichem Willen an die Menschen zu verstehen. Die Bezeichnung Malakh ist bis heute in vielen Sprachen rund um den Orient ähnlich erhalten geblieben wie z. B. im Türkischen und auch noch im Kurdischen als Melek.
