Mobile Suit Gundam (jap. 機動戦士ガンダム kidou senshi gandamu) ist eine 43-teilige japanische Anime-Serie aus dem Jahr 1979 von Yoshiyuki Tomino, produziert von Sunrise Inc.

Handlung

Mobile Suit Gundam handelt von einem interstellaren Krieg zwischen einer Föderation mit der Erde als Hauptsitz und dem Herzogtum Zion, das auf riesigen Weltraumstationen beheimatet ist. Die Schlachten werden mit riesigen Kampfrobotern sog. Mobile Suits kurz MS ausgetragen, wobei eine experimentelle Kampfeinheit der Erde namens Gundam eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Sie wird von dem ca. 14 jährigen Amuro Ray gesteuert. Sein größter Rivale ist Char Aznable der den Beinamen der Roter Komet trägt, da die MS die er steuert immer rot sind. Die Nachfolge-Serie Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam spielt einige Jahre nach Kriegsende also nach Mobile Suit Gundam. Trotzdem weist sie einige Parallelen auf und einige Figuren aus Mobile Suit Gundam kommen wieder vor.

Veröffentlichungen

Zusätzlich zur Fernsehserie erschien 1979 eine Version der Geschichte als Manga, die bislang zwei Bände umfasst und von Akita Shoten verlegt wurde. Neben der Ausstrahlung im japanischen Fernsehen gelangte die Serie auch in die USA.

Später wurde die Serie zusammengefasst und leicht überarbeitet in Form von drei Kinofilmen neu veröffentlicht. Bandai kündigte an, diese Kinofilme auf DVD zu veröffentlichen. Die für den 21. Dezember 2007 angekündigte Veröffentlichung wird dabei den Original-Ton in der Mono-Abmischung enthalten, während das Bildmaterial neu eingelesen wurde und nun ein HD-Master als Quelle für die Verarbeitung dient.[1]

Hintergründe

Mobile Suit Gundam löste durch seinen Erfolg in Japan die Entstehung des Gundam-Universums aus, einer der größten Science-Fiction-Sagas aller Zeiten. Sunrise produziert seither immer wieder weitere Gundam-Kinofilme, -Fortsetzungsserien und -Spin-Offs.
