In einem Molekül stehen verschiedene Molekülorbitale zur Verfügung, die von den vorhandenen Elektronen besetzt werden. Diese Orbitale sind verschieden energiereich. Sie werden daher nach zunehmendem Energieniveau besetzt.
In der Chemie sind die Anregungsmechanismen vom HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) in das LUMO von Bedeutung. Von dem Betrag des Energieunterschiedes hängt es ab, wie leicht die Elektronen den angeregten Zustand erreichen.
