Lord Cathcart

Earl Cathcart ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of the United Kingdom. Er wird von der Familie Cathcart geführt.

Der Stammsitz der Familie ist Gateley Hall bei Fakenham in Norfolk. Der frühere Familiensitz Cathcart Castle in Glasgow wurde bereits seit mehreren Jahrhunderten nicht mehr bewohnt, die Reste mussten 1980 wegen Baufälligkeit abgetragen werden.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde am 16. Juli 1814 für William Cathcart, 1. Viscount Cathcart, geschaffen. Dieser war ein bedeutender Soldat und Diplomat in der Zeit der Koalitionskriege.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der Earl Cathcart trägt die nachgeordneten Titel Viscount Cathcart, of Cathcart in der Grafschaft Renfrewshire, (verliehen 1807) und Baron Greenock, of Greenock in der Grafschaft Renfrewshire, (verliehen 1807) sowie Lord Cathcart (verliehen 1460). Während die beiden erstgenannten Titel zur Peerage of the United Kingdom gehören, ist der letztgenannte Teil der Peerage of Scotland.

Die Würde eines Lord Cathcart war zwischen 1447 und 1460 an Sir Alan Cathcart verliehen worden.

Der Titelerbe führt den Höflichkeitstitel Baron Greenock.
