Leucoxen, auch Leukoxen oder Leucoxene ist eine Mixtur aus eisen- und titanhaltigen Mineralien.[1]

Eigenschaften

Leukoxen ist in eigentlichem Sinne kein eigenständiges Mineral sondern eine stark veränderte Form des Ilmenits und besteht zu etwa 68% aus Titandioxid der Rutil- oder Anatas-Modifikation. Die Farbe kann von gelb über braun bis grau variieren.[2]

Vorkommen

Vorkommen finden sich in einigen Lavagesteinen und eisenhaltigen Erzen. Es entsteht durch Verwitterung titanhaltiger Mineralien wie Ilmenit, Perovskit oder Titanit.

Verwendung

Leucoxen wird wie Ilmenit als Rohstoff zur Herstellung von industriellem Titandioxid (Rutil) nach dem Chlorid-Verfahren verwendet. Hierzu wird es durch den Becher-Prozess in synthetischen Rutil überführt und von den eisenhaltigen Bestandteilen getrennt. Dieser Rutil wird dann zur Produktion von Titandioxid-Pigmenten dem Chlorid-Prozess zugeführt wird.[3]
