Layamon

Layamon war ein Dichter des frühen 13. Jahrhunderts, dessen Brut (um 1200; vielleicht ca. 1215) eine Geschichte Englands ist, geschrieben in alliterierenden Versen in mittelenglischer Sprache. Er behandelt die sagenhafte Geschichte Britanniens von Brutus' Ankunft nach dem Untergang Trojas bis zum Tode Cædwallas (689), des letzten britischen Königs, und liefert mit ihr die erste Bearbeitung des Artusstoffes in englischer Sprache.

Obwohl es auf dem Roman de Brut von Wace in normannischem Französisch beruht, ist Layamons Gedicht bemerkenswert für seinen Reichtum an angelsächsischem Vokabular. Der Forscher Roger S. Loomis zählte 150 Begriffe in den 32200 Zeilen. Der Stil und die Erzähltechnik verwandeln die höfische französische Vorlage in eine heroisierende und archaisierende, an altenglische Traditionen angelehnte Erzählung.

Layamon beschreibt sich selbst als Priester, der in Ardeley Regis bei Bewdley in Worcestershire lebt. Sein Gedicht lieferte die Vorlage für spätere Schriftsteller, Thomas Malory eingeschlossen.
