Lancaster ist eine Stadt (town) im US-Bundesstaat New Hampshire und Verwaltungssitz von Coos County mit 3.280 Einwohnern. Lancaster wird als Tor zur Great North Woods Region. Das östliche Stadtgebiet gehört teilweise zum White Mountain Nationalwald.

Geographie

Der Ort hat eine Fläche von 132,8 km², davon sind 129,8 km² Land und 3,0 km² (2,28 %) Wasser. Lancaster wird durch den Israel River, welcher in den Connecticut River fließt, entwässert.

Der Ort liegt 263 m über dem Meere, der höchste Punkt im Gemeindegebiet ist der Mount Cabot mit 1.003 m Höhe.

Geschichte

1763 wurde die Stadt von Captain David Page aus Petersham besiedelt. Es war die erste Siedlung nördlich von Haverhill, was 80 km südlich von Lancaster gelegen ist und lag ursprünglich in Land, welches heute Vermont gehört am Connecticut River, welcher die Grenze der beiden Staaten bildet. Der Ort wurde nach Lancaster in Massachusetts, der Heimatstadt eines Bewohners, benannt.
