Kulob (kyrillisch Кӯлоб, Persisch ‏کولاب‎) ist eine Stadt in der Region Chatlon in Tadschikistan. Mit einer Einwohnerzahl von 78.820 (Stand 1. Januar 2006) ist sie die drittgrößte im Land.

Geographie

Kulob liegt im Pamir-Gebirge durchschnittlich 580 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel.

Geschichte

Die Stadt war ein bedeutendes kulturelles, wissenschaftliches und geistiges Zentrum Mittelasiens und ein wichtiger Handelsplatz an der Seidenstraße. Sie war Teil des Khanats von Buchara (1500-1785) und des Emirats von Buchara (1785-1920). Am 15. März 1921 nahmen russische Truppen die Stadt ein. 1934 wurde Kulob Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz. Nach Auflösung der Sowjetunion und der Vereinigung der Provinzen Kulob und Qurghonteppa zur neuen Region Chatlon 1992 verlor sie diesen Status an Qurghonteppa.

Mehrere tausend russische Soldaten verblieben in der Stadt. Nach Angaben der Directory of RF Defense Related Agencies and Personnel befindet sich in Kulob eine Garnison der 201. Motorisierten Schützendivision aus dem russischen Militärbezirk Wolga-Ural. Weitere Stationierungsorte sind die Hauptstadt Duschanbe (Hauptquartier) und Qurghonteppa.

Wirtschaft und Infrastruktur

Kulob ist Industriestadt und ein Zentrum der Baumwollindustrie im Land.

Der Flughafen in Kulob wird von der tadschikischen Fluggesellschaft Tajik Air aus Duschanbe unregelmäßig angeflogen. Die Verbindung ist von der Witterung und den das ganze Jahr über auftretenden Treibstoffengpässen abhängig. 1998 wurde die Eisenbahnstrecke nach Qurghonteppa eröffnet.

Die Stadt ist Sitz einer Staatlichen Universität.

Städtepartnerschaft

Mit der Stadt Hamadan im Iran besteht eine Partnerschaft.
