Khujand

Chudschand ist die zweitgrößte Stadt in Tadschikistan. Im Tadschikischen heißt die Stadt Хуҷанд/Chudschand bzw. ‏خجند‎. Die Englische Schreibweise lautet Khujand, was auch die international übliche ist. Bis 1939 hieß die Stadt Ходжент/Chodschent, von 1939 bis 1992 Ленинобод/Leninobod (russisch Ленинабад/Leninabad). Der älteste Name der Stadt ist Alexandria Eschatê („das entfernteste Alexandria“). Chudschand liegt am Syrdarja im Ferghanatal und hat ca. 145.000 Einwohner.

Der Ort wurde von Alexander dem Großen im Mai 329 v. Chr. gegründet. Chudschand ist etwa 2500 Jahre alt. Die Stadt war lange ein wichtiger Handelsknotenpunkt entlang der Seidenstraße. Die Stadt durchlief eine wechselvolle Geschichte der Zugehörigkeit. Lange Zeit Teil des Persischen Reiches, wurde sie im 8. Jahrhundert von den Arabern geplündert und im 13. Jahrhundert von den Mongolen vollkommen zerstört.

Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts fiel die Region Russland zu, als diese ab 1866 große Teile Zentralasiens einnahmen. Im Zuge der Umgestaltung des russischen Staates hin zur UdSSR fiel die Stadt 1924 zunächst Usbekistan zu. 1929 wurde Chudschand Teil der Tadschikischen SSR. Heute ist die Stadt vor allem ein Zentrum der Textilproduktion, hierbei sticht vor allem die Seidenverarbeitung heraus.

In den 1950er Jahren wurde bei Chudschand der Kairakkum-Stausee gebaut.

Der 1999 erschienene Film Luna Papa wurde zum Großteil in und um Chudschand gedreht. Unter anderem wurde das Dorf, in dem die Handlung beginnt, extra für den Film südlich des Stausees aufgebaut. Außerdem wurde im Zentrum und im Arbob Palast einige Kilometer außerhalb der Stadt gefilmt.
