Kawakawa Ortschaft im Norden der neuseeländischen Nordinsel. Sie befindet sich im Far-North-Distrikt der Region Northland südlich der Bay of Islands, einer beliebten Erholungsregion des Landes. Der Ort hatte beim Zensus im Jahre 2006 1350 Einwohner, ein Rückgang um 51 Einwohner seit 2001.[1]

Der Ort entstand als Dienstleistungszentrum, als hier Kohle gefunden wurde. Deren Abbau wurde jedoch eingestellt und die Wirtschaft ist heute von der Landwirtschaft geprägt. [2]

Friedensreich Hundertwasser lebte dort 1975 bis zu seinem Tode im Jahr 2000. 1997 gestaltete er hier die öffentliche Toilette des Ortes. Eine weitere Sehenswürdigkeit sind die Glühwürmchen-Höhlen in nahegelegenen Waiomio.

In früheren Zeiten wurde die Siedlung oft als "Eisenbahn-Stadt des Nordens" bezeichnet, da hier sowohl die North Auckland Line, als auch das Streckennetz der Bay of Islands Vintage Railway verläuft. Letztere ist aber außer Betrieb und auf der North Auckland Line fahren ebenfalls keine Personenzüge mehr bis nach Kawakawa.

Bildung

Kawakawa besitzt eine Grundschule und ein College. Die Kawakawa Primary School ist eine Grundschule für die Klassen 1-8 mit einem decile rating von 1 und im Jahre 2009 309 Schülern.[3]

Das Bay of Islands College ist eine weiterführende Schule für die Klassen 9-15 mit einem decile von 1 und 2009 391 Schülern.[4]. Es nimmt Schüler aus dem Gebiet der Bay of Islands und der zentralen Region Northland auf. 85% der Schüler kommen täglich mit dem Bus zur Schule.
