Anchorage (englisch für Ankerplatz), eine Stadt (und gleichzeitig zusammengefasst als Borough) in Alaska, wurde 1915 als Hauptquartier der Alaska Railroad gegründet. Mit 279.671 Einwohnern (2007) ist es die größte Stadt und industrielles Zentrum von Alaska, aber nicht die Hauptstadt. Diese ist Juneau.

Die klimatischen Bedingungen sind durch das maritime Umfeld weniger extrem als im Hinterland.

Die nickelverarbeitende Industrie gilt als größter Wirtschaftsfaktor der ansonsten eher strukturschwachen Region. Zugleich sorgen die vier örtlichen Galvanisierungsbetriebe für eine erhebliche Umweltbelastung in der Stadt und der unmittelbaren Umgebung.

Anchorage beheimatet die University of Alaska (1954) und die Alaska Pacific University (1957). Das New Alaska Operahouse, das einzige Opernhaus Alaskas, wurde 1976 geschlossen.

Anchorage wurde 1916 in Jack Londons Novelle “In the eye of the hunter” verewigt und 1988 von Folksängerin Michelle Shocked im Album „Short, Sharp, Shocked“ besungen.

Zerstörung durch das Good-Friday-Erdbeben

Am 27. März 1964 verursachte ein schweres Erdbeben Todesfälle und großen Sachschaden. Das „Good Friday“-Erdbeben gilt als heftigste seismische Aktivität, die je in den USA gemessen worden ist. Diesem Erdbeben fielen einige der wenigen historischen Gebäude der Stadt zum Opfer. Heute stehen an entsprechender Stelle Funktionsbauten von Industrie und Handel ohne historischen oder architektonischen Wert. Als bedeutendstes Bauwerk der Stadt gilt das 1924 von Frank Lloyd Wright errichtete Cityhospital. Mit seiner großzügigen, funktionalen Art-Deco-Empfangshalle setzte der Architekt wesentliche Maßstäbe für nachfolgende Krankenhaus- und Heimpflegebauten.

Die Stadt verfügt über einen internationalen Flughafen, den Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (häufige Zwischenlandungen heute besonders des internationalen Containerverkehrs), und liegt an der einzigen Eisenbahnverbindung Alaskas, der Alaska Railroad.
