Die Abfertigungshalle des Flughafens

Der Flughafen von Guayaquil in Ecuador wurde im Jahre 2006 anlässlich der Einweihung des neuen Terminals von "Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar" in "Aeropuerto Internacional José Joaquín de Olmedo" umbenannt. Auch der ICAO-Code wechselte von SEGU auf SEGY. Der Flughafen besitzt das neueste Flughafenterminal in Ecuador in der größten Stadt des Landes, sein neuer Name erinnert an den berühmten Dichter und Präsidenten von Ecuador.

Das ehemalige "Simón Bolívar"-Terminal wird bis 13. August ausgedient haben und danach in ein Messezentrum umgewandelt, während man das neue Terminal gänzlich für den nationalen und internationalen Verkehr nutzen und in der Nähe sogar noch ein Hotel bauen will.

Mit seiner Kapazität von maximal 5 Millionen Passagieren jährlich soll das neue Terminal den Passagierverkehr für Guayaquil und den Süden Ecuadors für die nächsten 15 Jahre bedienen. Danach soll ein gänzlich neuer Flughafen 20 km auswärts in der Region Daule entstehen. Der momentane Flughafen liegt immer noch sehr stadtnah, nur fünf Kilometer nördlich des Stadtzentrums.
