Josiah Royce

Josiah Royce (* 10. November 1855 in Grass Valley, Kalifornien; † 14. September 1916 in Cambridge, Massachusetts) war ein amerikanischer Philosoph.

Royce war ein Schüler von Rudolf Hermann Lotze und Charles S. Peirce. 1882 wurde er Professor an der Harvard University. Zu seinen bekanntesten Studenten gehören Henry Maurice Sheffer, George H. Mead, Clarence Irving Lewis, ein Pionier der Modallogik und E. V. Huntington, der als Erster die Axiome der Boole'schen Algebra formulierte.

Philosophische Ansichten

Royce sah in der Wendung von Immanuel Kant zu Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling und Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel den wahren Weg der Philosophie. Nämlich den idealistischen Personalismus bzw. Panpsychismus: die Welt sei eine Gemeinschaft personenartiger Wesen, die in einer höchsten Geistesperson (Gott) geeinigt sind.
