John Wray

John Wray (* 13. Februar 1887 in Aquarius, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; † 5. April 1940 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler.

Wray war bereits ein erfolgreicher Theaterschauspieler am New Yorker Broadway als er in den Anfangsjahren des Tonfilms nach Hollywood zog, um eine Karriere im Filmgeschäft zu beginnen. Durch sein bestimmtes Aussehen erhielt er vor allem Rollen im Charakterfach.

Gleich mit seinen ersten Rollen wurde er dementsprechend eingesetzt. In der Verfilmung von Im Westen nichts Neues aus dem Jahr 1930 spielte er den sadistischen Ausbilder Himmelstoss. Auch mit seiner Darstellung des korrupten Politikers Mort Bradstreet in Czar of Broadway konnte er im selben Jahr auf sich aufmerksam machen.

Es folgten weitere Auftritte in Nebenrollen in Produktionen, deren Qualität zunehmend abnahm. Als Darsteller hervorstechen konnte er erst wieder 1936 in Frank Capras Mr. Deeds geht in die Stadt als erboster Farmer und als Wärter in Fritz Langs Film noir Gehetzt.
