John Vaughan

Sir John Vaughan KB (* 1747 oder 1748; † 30. Juni 1795 auf Martinique) war britischer Generalleutnant und zweiter Sohn des dritten Viscount Lisburne.

Vaughan diente im Siebenjährigen Krieg und unter Sir Henry Clinton im amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg. Von 1774 bis zu seinem Tod saß er im britischen und von 1776 bis 1783 auch im irischen Parlament. Bei der Erstürmung von Fort Montgomery 1777 zeichnete er sich so sehr aus, das Clinton das Fort in Fort Vaughan umbenennen wollte.

1779 nach England zurückgekehrt, wurde er als Cornwallis Nachfolger vorgesehen, falls dieser nicht nach Amerika zurückkehren sollte. Da Cornwallis aber zurückging, erhielt Vaughan stattdessen das Kommando auf den Leeward-Inseln. Im Februar 1781 nahm er gemeinsam mit Admiral Rodney die niederländische Insel St. Eustatius ein.

1782 zum Generalleutnant befördert zog sich Vaughan nach dem Krieg aus dem aktiven Dienst zurück. Bei Ausbruch des Französischen Revolutionskriegs wurde er reaktiviert und zum Oberbefehlshaber auf den Windward-Inseln ernannt.

Sir John Vaughan starb plötzlich am 30. Juni 1795 auf Martinique. Er war unverheiratet.
