John Russell 4. Duke of Bedford KG, PC, FRS (* 30. Oktober 1710 in Streatham; † 15. November 1771 in Chenies) war ein britischer Adliger und Politiker.

Leben

John war der Sohn von Wriothesley Russell, 2. Duke of Bedford, und dessen Gemahlin Elizabeth Howland, der Erbin von Streatham. Er folgte 1732 seinem älteren Bruder Wriothesley als Duke of Bedford.

Als britischer Staatsmann war er einer der prominentesten Gegner von Robert Walpole. John Russell war unter Henry Pelham Erster Lord der Admiralität, später dann Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1755–1761), Lordsiegelbewahrer (1761-1763) und britischer Botschafter in Frankreich (1762–1763), wo er bei den Verhandlungen zur Beendigung des Siebenjährigen Krieges eine entscheidende Rolle spielte. Von 1763 bis 1765 war er Lord President of the Council.

Aus seiner 1731 geschlossenen ersten Ehe mit Diane Spencer, Tochter des Charles Spencer, 3. Earl of Sunderland, die ihm ein bedeutendes Vermögen zubrachte, stammt ein Sohn:
