John Bird

John Bird (* 1709 in County Durham; † 31. März 1776 in London) war ein englischer Astronom und Hersteller von wissenschaftlichen Instrumenten.

Bird machte wichtige Fortschritte in der Entwicklung von astronomischen Instrumenten. Einige Instrumente wurden von Jeremiah Dixon verwendet. Ferner wurde ein von ihm entwickelter astronomische Quadrant von James Cook in Tahiti benutzt um den Venustransit im Juni 1769 zu beobachten. Einen Mauerquadranten von Bird erhielten 1750 das Royal Greenwich Observatory, 1756 die Sternwarte Göttingen, 1768 die Berliner Sternwarte, 1772 das Radcliffe Observatory in Oxford und 1776 die Mannheimer Sternwarte.[1]
