Geschichte

Die American Heart Association wurde 1924 von einer Gruppe von Kardiologen in New York gegründet. Die Vereinigung ging dabei aus einer früheren Initiative („Association for the Prevention and Relief of Heart Disease“) hervor, die von Ärzten und Sozialarbeitern gegründet worden war, um etwas gegen das mangelnde Bewusstsein für Herzerkrankungen zu unternehmen.

Organisation

Die AHA unterhält 12 Büros in den Vereinigten Staaten und Puerto Rico und gliedert sich in 7 Geschäftsbereiche:

  • Office of Chief Executive Officer
  • Advocacy
  • Corporate Operations
  • Field Operations and Development
  • Healthcare Markets
  • Science Operations
  • Technology and Customer Strategies

Aktivitäten

Die AHA veranstaltet zahlreiche Kongresse und Jahrestagungen, u. a. jährlich die sog. AHA Scientific Sessions. Darüber hinaus gibt sie mehrere weltweit sehr angesehene medizinische Fachzeitschriften heraus (z. B. Circulation, Circulation Research und Stroke).
