Die Irische See trennt die Inseln Irland und Großbritannien. Sie ist im Süden durch den St George's Channel (zwischen Irland und Wales) mit dem Atlantik verbunden, im Norden durch den Nordkanal (zwischen Irland and Schottland).

Die Irische See ist ein Brutgebiet der Nordseemakrele.

Die Isle of Man liegt in der Mitte der Irischen See. Der Rauminhalt des Meeres beträgt 0,006 Mio. km³. In die Irische See werden unter anderem die radioaktiv belasteten Abwässer des Atomanlage Sellafield eingeleitet, so sind z. B. 140 kg Technetium pro Jahr genehmigt. In den Bodensedimenten haben sich bis dato geschätzte 250 kg Plutonium angesammelt.
