SPIE und SPIE Europe (die International Society for Optical Engineering) sind zwei gemeinnützige Gesellschaften, die sich „Austausch, Sammlung und Verbreitung von Wissen“ auf dem Gebiet der Optik als Ziel gesetzt haben.
SPIE wurde am 1. Juli 1955 in Kalifornien als Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers gegründet. 1981 wurde der Name in den bis heute gebräuchlichen geändert. Die Gesellschaft hat z.Zt. über 17.000 Mitglieder, davon über 4.000 in Europa. Der Hauptsitz ist in Bellingham (Washington), und 2001 wurde SPIE Europe in Cardiff, UK, eröffnet.

Präsident der SPIE ist seit Anfang 2007 Brian Culshaw, Geschäftsführer ist Eugene G. Arthurs.
