Es wurde 1993 von David Albright, einem ehemaligen Nuklearwaffeninspekteur der Vereinte Nationen, gegründet und setzt sich nach dem Motto "Employing Science in the Pursuit of Peace" (Wissenschaftliches Handeln im Streben nach Frieden), für die Abrüstung von Nuklearwaffen ein.
