Indore (Hindi: इंदौर, Indaur) ist eine Stadt im Bundesstaat Madhya Pradesh in Indien mit rund 2 Millionen Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2011), am Zusammenfluss von Kham und Saraswati auf dem Vindhya-Plateau gelegen. Sie ist Industriestadt (Baumwoll-, Metall-, Möbel-, chemische Industrie), Kulturzentrum mit Universität, Theater, Museen und Kinos, Verkehrsknoten (Straße, Eisenbahn, Flughafen) und Forschungszentrum mit wissenschaftlichen Instituten. In der Umgebung Anbau von Baumwolle, Hirse, Mais, Raps und Weizen.

Geschichte

Nachdem Indore jahrhundertelang nur eine unbedeutende Station an den Pilgerpfaden nach Omkareshwar und Ujjain war, entwickelte es sich ab 1715 zu einem bedeutenden Handelszentrum der Region. Malhar Rao Holkar (1694-1766), der Gründer der Holkar-Dynastie, machte Indore zur Hauptstadt seines gleichnamigen Reiches.

Seit dem Jahre 1956 gehört Indore zum Bundesstaat Madhya Pradesh.

Heute ist Indore das größte Handels- und Wirtschaftszentrum der Region. Das in der Nähe gelegene Industriegebiet Pithampur, oft als "Indiens Detroit" bezeichnet, ist Sitz von zahlreichen Stahlgiganten und Motorwerken, zu denen Honda, Hindustan Motors, Bajaj und Pratap Steel gehören.

Sehenswert ist der am Ufer des Kham stehende Lal-Bagh-Palast. Er ist ein Beispiel für die extravaganten neoklassizistischen Bauten, die eine Vorliebe der unermesslich reichen Maharajas des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts waren. Das Wahrzeichen von Indore ist der alte Holkar-Palast "Raj Wada", der einen von Palmen gesäumten Platz im Herzen der Stadt überragt. Die Villa wurde im Stil eines westindischen Stadthauses gebaut. Ein weiter Palast ist der Manik Bagh.
