(1566) Icarus ist ein erdnaher Asteroid (Planetoid), aus der Gruppe der Apollo-Asteroiden. Dies sind Himmelskörper, deren Bahn die Erdbahn kreuzen können.

Der Asteroid wurde am 27. Juni 1949 von Walter Baade entdeckt und nach Ikarus, einer tragischen Gestalt der griechischen Sage benannt. Ikarus kam mit Hilfe von selbstgebauten Flügeln der Sonne zu nahe und stürzte ab.

Icarus bewegt sich zwischen 0,1866 AU (Perihel) und 1,9692 AU (Aphel) in rund 409 Tagen auf einer stark elliptischen Bahn um die Sonne. Die Bahnexzentrizität beträgt 0,8269, die Bahn ist um 22,856 ° gegen die Ekliptik geneigt.

Der Durchmesser von Icarus beträgt nur etwa einen Kilometer. Er besitzt eine relativ helle Oberfläche mit einer Albedo von 0,4.
