Hot Chocolate ist eine britische Soul- und Funkband, die 1969 gegründet wurde und ihre größten Erfolge mit Disco-Titeln zwischen 1974 und 1983 feierte.

Bandgeschichte

Gründungsmitglieder waren Errol Brown (Gesang), Harvey Hinsley (Gitarre), Larry Ferguson (Keyboard), Tony Wilson (E-Bass), Tony Connor (Schlagzeug) und Patrick Olive (Conga). Tony Wilson verließ 1975 die Band und dafür übernahm Patrick Olive den Basspart.

Der internationale Durchbruch gelang 1974 mit dem Titel Emma, der Geschichte einer hoffnungsvollen Jung-Mimin, die trotz aller Talente nicht nach oben kommt und deshalb Selbstmord begeht. Dieser Titel erreichte in den USA Platz 8 und wurde später auch mehrfach von anderen Bands nachgesungen (u. a. von den Sisters of Mercy und Urge Overkill). Geprägt wurde die Gruppe durch ihren charismatischen, kahlköpfigen Sänger Errol Brown. Doch obwohl die Gruppe mit Titeln wie You Sexy Thing (war 1987 wieder in den Charts in GB und D ), Every 1's a Winner, So you win again und No doubt about it eine Vielzahl, oft selbst geschriebener, zumeist von Mickie Most produzierter Hits hatten, erreichte sie in Deutschland nie den Status zeitgenössischer Gruppen wie ABBA, Boney M. oder Smokie, die sich allesamt medial besser verkaufen ließen. In den 70er Jahren gab es nur drei Interpreten, die in jedem Jahr Chart-Platzierungen in Großbritannien aufweisen konnten: Diana Ross, Elvis Presley und Hot Chocolate[1].

Hot Chocolate war maßgeblich an der Entwicklung des Disco-Sounds beteiligt.

1981 auf der Höhe ihres Erfolges spielte Hot Chocolate auch auf der Hochzeit von Prinz Charles und Lady Diana.

1985 verließ Sänger Errol Brown die Band.

1987 erreichte die Gruppe, fast schon in Vergessenheit geraten, noch einmal Top-Ten-Platzierungen, als ein Remix-Album ihrer größten Hits herausgegeben wurde.

Im November 2003 empfing die britische Königin den Sänger Errol Brown und ehrte ihn für sein musikalisches Lebenswerk mit dem MBE.

Errol Brown ist heute erfolgreicher Solo-Sänger und Produzent und arbeitete auch mit Dieter Bohlen zusammen.

Hot Chocolate besteht weiterhin, allerdings ohne Larry Ferguson und mit Greg Bannis als neuem Sänger. Vorwiegend spielt die Gruppe bei kleineren Auftritten die alten Hits.
