Henry A. Murray

Henry Alexander Murray (* 13. Mai 1893 in New York City; † 23. Juni 1988 in Cambridge) war ein US-amerikanischer Psychologe, der über 30 Jahre lang an der Harvard University lehrte.

Seine 1938 veröffentlichte Persönlichkeitstheorie war der Beginn der Erforschung der Leistungsmotivation. Darin unterscheidet er primäre („viszerogene“) und sekundäre („psychogene“) Bedürfnisse (needs) des Menschen.

Primäre Bedürfnisse beruhen auf organischen Vorgängen und treten zyklisch oder regulatorisch auf. Zu den primären Bedürfnissen zählen Hunger, Durst etc.

Zu den "höheren" sekundären Bedürfnissen zählen Leistung (need Achievement), Zugehörigkeit (need Affiliation), Unabhängigkeit (need Autonomy) etc., die im Verlauf der individuellen Entwicklung erworben werden.

Ein weiterer Beitrag zur Motivationsforschung, den Murray leistete, war die Entwicklung des TAT (Thematischen Auffassungstest/Thematischer Apperzeptionstest), der später von David McClelland weiter entwickelt wurde.

1943 fertigte Murray ein Gutachten über die Persönlichkeit Adolf Hitlers für den damaligen US-amerikanischen Geheimdienst OSS an (online s. Werke).
