Die Sonne hat ein Magnetfeld, das nur entfernt als Dipolfeld angesehen werden kann. An den Polregionen befinden sich die scharf begrenzten koronalen Löcher. In der Äquatorregion befinden sich aktivere Gebiete, die sich durch geschlossene Magnetfeldlinien auszeichnen.

Der aus geladenen Teilchen bestehende Sonnenwind (Plasma) bewirkt ein sich von der Sonne entfernendes, rotierendes Magnetfeld. In dem vom solaren Plasma gefüllten Raum, der Heliosphäre, gibt es eine Stelle, an der die Polarität des interplanetarischen Magnetfeldes von Nord nach Süd wechselt. Oder anders gesagt: Es gibt eine Grenzschicht, die Bereiche des Sonnenwindes mit entgegengesetzt gerichteten Magnetfeldern voneinander trennt. Es entsteht ein Gebilde, das um die Sonne rotiert und sich etwa in Höhe der Sonnenäquatorebene so weit ausdehnt, wie der Sonnenwind reicht. Dieses Feld heißt Heliosphärische Stromschicht oder auf englisch Heliospheric current sheet, oft abgekürzt als HCS.

Form

Die Schicht ist etwa 10.000 km dick.

Die Form hängt sehr stark vom dem aktuellen Magnetfeld der Sonne ab, welches vom normalen Dipol bis zu einem Feld mit z.b. zwei Nordpolen variieren kann. In einigen Veröffentlichungen spricht man vom "Ballerina skirt" d. h. Ballerinaröckchen als normalen Zustand. Als die Sonne im Jahre 2000 einen zweiten magnetischen Nordpol ausbildete, hatte man ein eine Milliarde Kilometer großes Feld von der Form eines Schneckenhaus angenommen. Tatsächlich konnten Messungen der ESA-NASA-Sonde Ulysses diese Vorhersage bestätigen.

Elektrischer Stromfluss

Der elektrische Strom in der Stromschicht ist radial einwärts gerichtet und hat eine Größenordnung von maximal 10-10 A/m² (10-4 A/km²).

Im Vergleich sind die Birkeland-Ströme 1000-fach schwächere astrophysikalische Ströme, die in der Umgebung der Erde zu finden sind.

Geschichte

Die heliosphärische Stromschicht wurde von John M. Wilcox[1] und Norman F. Ness[2] entdeckt. Sie veröffentlichten im Jahre 1965. In den 70er Jahren entwickelt K. H. Schatten[3] das erste mathematische Modell zur Form der Stromschicht.
