Haruspex

Ein Haruspex (lat.; Plural: Haruspices) war ein Angehöriger eines altrömischen Priesterkollegiums.

Seine Aufgabe war, aus den Eingeweiden der geschlachteten Opfertiere vorauszusagen, ob die Götter eine beabsichtigte Unternehmung billigten oder nicht.

Ursprünglich war diese Art der Vorzeichendeutung als Leberschau bei den Etruskern heimisch, doch wurden Amt und Bezeichnung in ganz früher Zeit von den Römern übernommen, als in der lateinischen Sprache noch der Ausdruck haru („Eingeweide“) existierte, der dann aber vor Einsetzen lateinischer literarischer Zeugnisse ausstarb. Dieser wurde wie beim Augur (Auspex, „Vogelschauer“) mit der Verbalwurzel spec- „schauen“ verknüpft. Gegenüber dem Auspex hatte der Haruspex den Vorteil, dass er den göttlichen Willen viel schneller erkunden konnte.

Die Weissagungen der Haruspizes mussten durch den Senat bestätigt werden. Auch Feldzüge wurden durch Haruspizes begleitet.
