Als Allegheny Mountains bezeichnete man früher das gesamte Gebiet der Appalachen. Es ist mit dieser Bedeutung gelegentlich noch in älterer Reiseliteratur oder in Abenteuerromanen zu finden, die Nordamerika als Handlungsort haben. Heute bezeichnet man nur noch ein kleines Gebiet der westlichen Appalachen so. Dieses Gebiet liegt zwischen den Catskill Mountains und West Virginia. Dieser Teil des Gebirges ist etwa 1.300 Meter hoch und stark bewaldet. Bis heute führen nur wenige Straßen durch diese Region.

Bis zur Unabhängigkeitserklärung der USA im Jahre 1776 bildeten die Allegheny Mountains ein natürliches Hindernis bei der Westexpansion.
