Sir Hans Sloane (* 16. April 1660 in Killyleagh; † 11. Januar 1753 in Chelsea) war ein englischer Wissenschaftler, Mediziner und Botaniker. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „Sloane“.

Leben

Frühzeitig interessierte er sich für Botanik und Naturgeschichte. Nach seiner schulischen Ausbildung begann er ein Studium der Medizin, Chemie und Biologie in London. Danach unternahm er Reisen nach Frankreich, wo er in Paris und Montpellier seine Studien fortsetzte und 1683 promovierte. Ab 1687 unternahm er eine längere Forschungsreise nach Jamaika.

Zu seinem Bekanntenkreis zählten Wissenschaftler wie Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton sowie Edmond Halley.

Am 21. Januar 1685 wurde Sloane zum Mitglied der Royal Society gewählt und wurde 1727 zu deren Präsidenten ernannt, wobei er die direkte Nachfolge Isaac Newtons antrat. 1716 erhielt er den Titel Sir.

Hans Sloane war ein leidenschaftlicher Sammler. Neben seinem umfangreichen Herbarium umfasst seine Sammlung Insekten, Fossilien, Steine, Münzen, Gemälde sowie Antiquitäten aus Ägypten, Peru, Nordamerika sowie dem Orient. Diese Sammlung bildete den Grundstein des British Museum in London. Nach ihm benannt ist auch der Sloane Square.

Ehrentaxa

Carl von Linné benannte ihm zu Ehren die Gattung Sloanea der Pflanzenfamilie Elaeocarpaceae. Pieter Cramer benannte den ausgestorbenen jamaikanischen Schmetterling Urania sloanus nach Sloane, Bloch und Schneider den Viperfisch Chauliodus sloani.
