Grammar School

Grammar Schools entsprechen heutzutage im Vereinigten Königreich den deutschen Gymnasien. Die Schulen sind vor allem bekannt für die Pflege der klassischen Studien (Latein und Altgriechisch). Der achtjährige Kursus bereitet auf das Hochschulstudium vor, die Mehrzahl der Schüler wechselt jedoch schon nach sechs Jahren mit dem dann erworbenen Grammar School Certificate in das berufliche Bildungswesen (Technical Colleges).

Der hohe Standard der Ausbildung an den Grammar Schools bewirkte einen starken Zulauf, und es wurde schwierig, einen Platz zu bekommen. An den staatlichen Schulen führte man Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts Zulassungsprüfungen für Elf- und Zwölfjährige ein. Ab den 1950er Jahren begann man mit der graduellen Einführung von Comprehensive Schools, die der deutschen Gesamtschule entsprechen. Viele der bekannten Grammar Schools wie in Manchester oder das King Edward's in Birmingham wollten jedoch das Selektionsprinzip nicht aufgeben und wurden deshalb Public Schools.

Im mittelalterlichen Europa war Grammar School die Bezeichnung für jede Schule. Viele dieser religiösen Bildungsstätten gehörten zu Kathedralen und Klöstern, andere wurden als wohltätige Einrichtungen gegründet. Gelehrt wurde lateinische Grammatik. Im 14. Jahrhundert gab es in England und Wales etwa 400 Grammar Schools für eine Bevölkerung von rund 2,5 Millionen. Oft wurden solche Schulen auch Höhere Schule genannt, vor allem in Schottland, wo dieser Begriff 1519 zum ersten Mal in Edinburgh benutzt wurde.

Grammar Schools kosteten nichts und wurden ab dem 16. Jahrhundert fast überall als Public Schools bezeichnet, im Gegensatz zu den kleineren und mehr elitären Privatschulen, für deren Besuch Gebühren zu entrichten waren. Im Laufe der Zeit entwickelten sich viele der größeren Grammar Schools zu modernen, kostenpflichtigen Public Schools; die ursprüngliche Bezeichnung Grammar School überließen sie dabei denjenigen Einrichtungen, die keine Gebühren erhoben. Die Fördermittel für diese Schulen kommen in neuerer Zeit nicht mehr aus karitativen Quellen, sondern bestehen aus staatlichen Zuschüssen.
